A uniform mixture of light and dark sand grains from Sæból shore. Sand grains are slightly less than 1 mm in maximum diameter. Sæból lies in a remote valley at the Fjord Mjóifjörður in East Iceland, directly at the ocean. Tied closely to the weather and the seasons, Sæból may be reachable by car only some of the year. Being so remote, Sæból is a great get away place where one can find peace and quiet.

A mixture of tan to white opaque fragments of mollusk shells along with some purple and gray shell fragments (upper center) accompany the numerous dark gray to black sand grains of volcanic origin are in this sample.

A mixture of dark volcanic sand grains admixed with white opaque sand grains from mollusk shells dominates this sand collection. Clear fragments of quartz (center) plus a smoothly rounded dark tan sand grain are present in the upper left center of this photomicrograph.

While dark sand grains of volcanic origin dominate this image, smoothly rounded white and tan opaque mollusk grains are interspersed with dark sand grains of volcanic origin. With the exception of clear quartz grains with sharp angles, most light and dark sand grains have relatively smooth to rounded edges having been worn down by continuous wave action.
